Elections Office Begins the Official Canvass Process Thursday March 5th

The Yolo County Elections Office has begun the canvassing process for the 2020 Presidential Primary Election to ensure every eligible ballot is counted accurately. Any member of the public may observe the canvass.

After every election in Yolo County, the Registrar of Voters begins the canvass on the Thursday following the election and continues during working hours until it is completed. The time allowed to complete the canvass for this election is thirty days (30) after the election.

The Elections Office must follow many state mandates during the official canvass period before the election results can be certified. The following is a summary of the main tasks of the canvass process:

  • Account for, process, and count Vote by Mail ballots returned at the polls
  • Account for, process, and count Provisional and Conditional ballots
  • Reconcile Vote by Mail ballots and precinct ballots and rosters
  • Account for voters who voted
  • Duplicate damaged ballots – prepare for counting
  • Count write-in votes
  • Conduct the one percent (1%) manual tally
  • Report results
  • Store Election materials for the time period required by law
