Elections Canvass Process Update & Extension

In response to the statewide “Stay at Home” declaration by Governor Newsom on March 19, 2020, and Executive Order N-34-20 issued on March 20, 2020, the deadline to certify the March 3, 2020 Presidential Primary has been extended by 21 days (until April 23, 2020). This extension is being provided due to the staffing issues many election offices across the state are experiencing, including Yolo County.

The Yolo County Elections office began the canvas process of the 2020 Primary Presidential Election on March 5, 2020, and has been working daily to complete the certification of the election. As a result of state and local shelter-in-place directives, nearly all extra help election staff that typically assist with the canvassing process have been sent home for safety reasons. Remaining staff are taking extra precautionary measures to ensure social distancing, which like other counties, has impacted the time needed to complete the certification process. Notwithstanding these challenges, members of the public that would like to observe the canvass process are still able to do so as long as social distancing protocols are adhered to. “The safety of staff and residents is our primary concern while we continue to work diligently towards certifying the election,” said Jesse Salinas, Yolo County Assessor/Clerk-Recorder/Registrar of Voters.

Yolo County Elections Office plans to post its next results update prior to the close of business on Friday March 27, 2020.
