What We Do

In California, all federal, statewide and countywide elections are conducted at the county level, under the coordination and supervision of the Secretary of State. Most of those elections occur in even-numbered years when legislative seats are up for election.

Conducting elections involves more than counting ballots on Election Night. It is a year-round operation: maintaining voter records, determining which candidates and initiatives are eligible to appear on the ballot, preparing for upcoming elections and documenting past ones.

Even-numbered years bring two major elections: a primary and a general election. We also conduct elections on behalf of cities, school districts and other jurisdictions within the county. Whatever the year and whatever the election, our work begins long before Election Day.

Who We Are

The Elections Office is one of three sister agencies directed by the Yolo County Assessor/Clerk-Recorder/Registrar of Voters, who is elected every four years.

None of us majored in Elections. Our practices reflect the experience of many years, by long-serving, full-time staff who are certified election officials. In the months preceding an election, when our workload is highest, our year-round staff is supplemented by a valued group of seasonal workers.

What We Believe

The California Elections Code dictates how elections must be run, and we adhere to it scrupulously.

We also follow our conscience: elections must be fair, accurate, private and transparent; voters must never be disenfranchised or impeded; service should be friendly, courteous and prompt; and tax dollars spent sensibly and carefully.

'Private' and 'transparent' are not as contradictory as they sound. We guard the privacy of your ballots and data. But our operations are open to public view.

Because elections are so important, public confidence in the fairness and accuracy of elections is vital. We provide the same excellent service to every candidate, every voter and every campaign.
